When you want to explore, ride gravel, or just get lost on your bike look to the Donnelly EMP. It offers a tight, closely-spaced tread that rolls fast, but still has some edge knobs for cornering on loose dirt or gravel. Works great for bikepacking or touring on mixed surfaces too. I've been using these on the "world famous" Fullerton Loop (mostly dirt roads with some singletrack) to great success.
Tubeless tires with sealant are a must for gravel and adventure riding. The EMP comes in a few versions - the ones on this page are tubeless-ready for modern rims. There is also a puncture protection belt under the tread to reduce the risk of getting stranded in the middle of nowhere on your adventure rides. With sealant you have a very low risk of flats.
The EMP tire is named for Emporia, Kansas, the home of the Dirty Kanza (now known as Unbound Gravel), one of the original gravel adventure rides where the bigger, wider casing and higher air volume are appreciated.
In the 700x38 size this tire will fit most modern cyclocross frames and forks, but might not fit some older cyclocross race bikes that have really tight clearances. The 38mm version should fit just about every modern gravel bike with 700c wheels. It's also offered in a wider 700x45 size designed for modern gravel / adventure bikes that have larger tire clearance on the frame and fork baked in.
