In my experience, the best way in 2020 to have a scrupulously clean bicycle chain is lubricating with wax. This system brings the speed and silence of Silca's Super Secret Chain Lube, in the convenience of a pouch to dip the chain in (instead of a drip applicator). The pouch is  submersible and re-usable - simply put the chain in the bag and place into hot water. It's basically a "sous vide" cooking-style bag.
