One of the most important Spring Classics, the Ronde van Vlaanderen (the Tour of Flanders) or simply "De Ronde" is coming up fast! As with Paris-Roubaix, this is one that die-hard cycling fans have circled on their calendars, and many of the same riders will target both these races.
To succeed riders need supreme fitness, tactics, a strong supporting team, and a little bit of luck. Here's how to tune in:
Tour of Flanders 2022 Live stream
For readers in the USA, you'll need a subscription to FloBikes for the live stream for the 2022 Tour of Flanders. Learn more about the FloBikes service.
Like another cobbled classic, Paris-Roubaix, the Tour of Flanders is ancient - over 100 years old. Very little has ever stopped it from running, it even continued uninterrupted right through World War II.
A handful of riders have won both Paris-Roubaix and Flanders in the same year, with Tom Boonen and Fabian Cancellara both doing that twice! A true feat.
Massive crowds of fans appear in large numbers on the short, but steep, and sometimes slippery hills across the region, these climbs are often incredibly narrow making positioning critical. An untimely flat or mechanical can mean a long wait for the team car due to congestion, destroying any chances of a win.
The route this year is Antwerp to Oudenaarde, at more than 169 miles - a whopper.
What about the Elite women?
In the last 5 years Flanders was added to the UCI Women's World Tour level. Recent winners include Coryn Rivera and Lizzie Armistead (now Deignan) who also won the inaugural Paris-Roubaix Femmes last Fall.
Live streaming coverage of the Women's race in the past has been less than thorough; complicated by the Men's and Women's races running concurrently on the same day. If you want to follow this one live, watch the live stream and then supplement with Twitter or race radio.
When is the 2022 edition?
Elite Men and Elite Women are both on Sunday, April 3rd.
Ronde van Vlaanderen 2022 favorites - Men
Wout van Aert already won Omloop Het Nieuwsblad and looked great at Paris-Nice. Given he skipped the cyclocross World Championship to prepare for events like "De Ronde", stakes are high.
An atypical rider will take the start this year - Tadej Pogačar, the 2x Tour de France winner who recently crushed the field with a solo breakaway at Strade Bianche. He's not the usual one-day strongman rider type who excels at Flanders, but can't be counted out given his results.
Mathieu van der Poel, 2020 winner, is back, having resumed racing just a few weeks ago following knee surgery.
Out? Peter Sagan, notably. He announced he'd undergo some testing after a disappointing Spring campaign, and Julian Alaphilippe as well will miss this one too.
Ronde van Vlaanderen 2022 favorites - Women
Lizzie Deignan, last year's Paris-Roubaix winner is out, missing the 2022 season entirely due to her pregnancy. I'd keep an eye on the GOAT - Marianne Vos - and 2021 winner, Annemiek van Vleuten.
